There are many different environments where the noise level can put your hearing at risk. Working with certain tools is one such example, especially if you are working with power tools every single day.

The Risks

If your workplace is subjected sound that is above 85 decibels, it is critical to be wearing some sort of protective hearing device, such as custom ear plugs.

Those who work with tools and different machines, such as construction workers, or those who work with tools frequently for any other reason, are putting themselves at risk in more ways than one.

The most obvious one here, of course, is that your are putting yourself at risk of developing permanent hearing loss. Permanent hearing loss cannot be improved by surgery or with hearing aids, so it is important to take measures to prevent it from occurring in the first place.

Also keep in mind that damage can occur even with noise that is the equivalent of running a lawn mower for a full work shift. Initially, this could lead to temporary hearing loss.

However, exposure to a high level of noise, on a consistent bases, in addition to exposure to even smaller noise levels (like nail guns, for example), can lead to permanent hearing loss.

Permanent hearing loss can negatively impact your quality of life by making it difficult to understand speech and ultimately communicate with those around you. This can lead to isolation, which can put you at risk of developing anxiety and depression.

What’s concerning about permanent hearing loss is that it tends to develop gradually, over time, so you may not even be aware that you are experiencing any damage.

There are other dangers as well. Loud noise can not only reduce your productivity, but it can also put you at risk of getting into an accident due to fact that you’ve missed various alerts or signals.

Hearing protectors can reduce the level of noise and ultimately reduce the risk of permanent hearing loss and accidents.

However, it is important to keep in mind that not just any ear plugs will do. It’s important to get custom ear plugs. Custom ear plugs are designed and customized to your own ears to ensure not only maximum effectiveness, but also comfort. Poorly fitted ear plugs can actually reduce their effectiveness.

Also consider that music headphones are not a sufficient replacement for hearing protectors. Wearing poorly fitted hearing devices or wearing your hearing protectors only half of the time, can jeopardize your hearing as well.

If you are in search of custom ear plugs to protect your long-term hearing, whether from working with tools, or in a loud workplace, House of Hearing Clinic has you covered. House of Hearing Clinic is a prominent hearing clinic in Toronto offering quality care from highly trained audiologists. Book your appointment today here.
