The Relationship Between Diet and Hearing

Although diet and hearing don’t seem immediately linked to each other, the science and data behind the topic suggests that, in fact, there is a link between the two. Much of the data shows that healthy eating may provide a protective function, as you will see below. Take a look at what some of the research currently says and what you can do to preserve your hearing.

The Relationship Between Diet and Hearing

There is a link between diet and hearing. The following list is not exhaustive but is rather meant to provide a few examples of the current research that is out there.

A 2014 study published in the International Journal of Audiology, for example, found that a good diet plays a part in the prevention of hearing loss. For the purpose of this study, a good diet was defined as a diet that was rich in vegetables, fruit, and fibre and that kept salt, cholesterol, fat, and saturated fat beneath recommended levels.

Interestingly, that same study also found that people who ate well but had a high exposure to loud sounds had a similar level of hearing to people who ate less healthily but experienced less noise exposure. The author of the study concluded that the data makes sense given that our auditory system is dependent on our cardiovascular health, our neural health, and our metabolic health.

Here are some other examples. A 2017 study found that a healthier diet was associated with decreased odds of persistent tinnitus while a study going back to 2010, published in the Otolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery Journal, found that folate was linked with a reduced risk of hearing loss. Folate is a B vitamin that is found in many plant foods like asparagus and Brussels sprouts.

The Takeaway

Ultimately, there are many different factors that can contribute to hearing levels, such as genetic factors, environmental factors, sex, race, gender, and age to name a few. Many of these factors are uncontrollable. There are, however, also factors that are within our control—like diet—that can positively contribute to how well we hear.
