Hearing loss is not typically associated with pregnancy. In fact, the topic is rarely talked about and, in some cases, little is known about the causes of hearing loss during pregnancy. However, it is always important to be informed. So, with that in mind, here is everything you need to know about pregnancy and hearing loss. The following blog post will examine two of the more commonly cited causes of hearing loss during pregnancy.
Otosclerosis
If you notice hearing loss during your pregnancy, one potential cause is what is known as otosclerosis. This is one of the more common causes of hearing loss in pregnancy. Keep in mind that pregnancy does not cause otosclerosis but rather makes the symptoms get worse and progress more rapidly.
Otosclerosis is a condition in the ear wherein there’s abnormal bone growth. It’s a common cause of hearing loss in young adults. Symptoms of otosclerosis include hearing loss (which gets worse over time), speaking softly because your voice seems loud, and tinnitus (a buzzing or humming in your ear) to name just a few.
In order to fix hearing loss caused by otosclerosis, surgery or a hearing aid are often necessary. It is important that you do not leave this untreated as it can potentially spread to your inner ear and make it so that hearing loss can’t be improved with surgery.
Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (Sudden Deafness)
Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (also known as sudden deafness) is a medical emergency that, although rare, can happen during pregnancy. The problem is that it’s not well understood. Just as it sounds, sudden sensorineural hearing loss is marked by sudden deafness. If you experience this, it is imperative that you seek medical attention right away.
Always Consult Your Doctor If You Notice Any Signs of Hearing Loss
While in some instances your doctor may tell you that your hearing loss could go away after your pregnancy, this is not always the case. It is important to be proactive and to speak to your doctor about your hearing loss as soon as you notice signs of it.
